Despite the unfortunate almost shrill subtitle How America Can Win tacked on to the US edition only Dyer presents a well balanced picture of the current state of China s international political and economic ambitions Dyer really gets China and for the most part keeps his own biases in check In fact the how America can win part is limited to the last six pages of the penultimate chapter arguably the weakest six pages in the book which I wonder were also hastily penned for American readersFor those who live in Asia and pay attention to the news there are few surprises between these covers But the facts and arguments are exceedingly well researched and well written and are a good source of talking points in any discussion of China s rise and America s responses His discussion about the political obstacles to the renminbi becoming a world fiat currency are especially relevant right nowFor me the first third of the book about territorial and military tensions was a bit long the chapters on economic competition being of greater interest Sadly little was written about the rumbling cyber war perhaps because it s too secretive for even the most resourceful journalist to gain access to the factsI recommend this book to any westerner who is beginning or planning to do business with China as well as those interested like I am in evidence regarding the decline of American hegemony in the world The book won t give cheer to those either pro or against China or the USA but will clarify the issues as they stand at this moment in history and give you something to think aboutIncidentally the author is not to be confused with his novelist and essayist namesake
